# Smart Chapters

> Turn a finished video into clear YouTube chapters with titles, timestamps, and optional timeline markers.

Smart Chapters reads the spoken content of your active sequence and creates a structured list of YouTube chapters with clear titles and timestamps.

You can copy the list directly into a video description and optionally add the chapters as markers on the timeline.

## Quick Start

  <Step title="Generate chapters">
    Click **Generate Chapters** and keep the editing application open while the sequence is processed.

  <Step title="Use the result">
    Click **Copy text** for your video description, or **Add Markers** to place the chapter titles on the timeline.

## Settings

| Setting          | Range         | What it does                                                            |
| ---------------- | ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Min Chapters** | 1–30          | Minimum number of sections the tool should identify.                    |
| **Max Chapters** | up to 50      | Maximum number of sections it may return.                               |
| **Brief**        | optional text | Gives context, names important topics, or requests a specific grouping. |

The first chapter begins at `00:00`, which is required by YouTube chapter formatting.

  Do not force too many chapters. A chapter should represent a real topic change, not every short pause or example.

## Writing a useful brief

* *“Separate the introduction, tutorial, pricing discussion, and conclusion.”*
* *“Keep every product demo as its own chapter.”*
* *“Use short, factual titles and keep the sponsor section separate.”*

The brief guides the organization. It does not replace the actual spoken content and cannot create chapters for topics that are not present.

## Review and export

Read the generated titles and check their timecodes before publishing. **Copy text** copies the complete chapter list in a format suitable for a description. **Add Markers** places each title at its timestamp on the active timeline.

  Adding markers does not cut or rearrange the sequence. It only adds navigation points.

## Common pitfalls

<Warning>
  * **Unclear or missing dialogue** produces weak chapter boundaries.
  * **A very high minimum** can split one topic into several artificial chapters.
  * **A very low maximum** can merge unrelated topics.
  * **Changing the sequence after generation** makes the timestamps outdated. Generate again after major edits.
  * **Editing during processing** can cause the analyzed audio to differ from the current timeline.

  For a 10 to 30 minute video, start with 5 minimum and 10 maximum chapters, then regenerate with a more specific brief only if the structure is too broad.
